About the Role
As an integral part of our engineering team, you will work on and contribute to a range of unmanned aircraft products and research and development hardware projects. Projects include adding new features to our existing fleet of airframe and payload systems, evaluating and integrating hardware and software systems supplied by our technology partners, building engineering tools to make our development and deployment processes more efficient.
As a Mechanical Designer, you will be responsible for developing innovative mechanical design solutions of our propulsion systems, fuel systems, airframes, payloads, and collaborating with other team members and assist in conducting feasibility studies and coordinating validation testing on new and modified designs utilizing CAD and analysis tools.
Role and Responsibilities
- Contribute to cross-functional design reviews and provide feedback to the engineering team on design for manufacture and assembly.
- Work closely with product/project management, business teams, design engineers, and technical leadership to improve our production operation and drive continuous improvements.
- Contribute, develop, and maintain project schedule deliverables, establish standards and expectations for completion of manufacturing operations.
- Contribute to the development of manufacturing processes.
- Provide guidance and support on resolving supply chain manufacturing challenges.
- Support in defining requirements and assist in the design and development of stable, capable, and manufacturing solutions.
- Support new product system development, analysis, and test projects.
- Assist in the development of system and subsystem requirements that meet performance, reliability, and overall product requirements.
- Multi-disciplined engineer, regularly interfacing with electrical, software, manufacturing, and flight test in a cross functional environment.
- Support verification and validation test plans for new products that could include but are not limited to propulsion performance characterization, reliability and durability, aerodynamic performance, environmental, and acoustic performance.
- Develop systems with consideration towards balancing weight, performance, productization, operations and maintenance.
- Produce technical information packages to capture and communicate the findings of the new product design and development.
- Perform system, subsystem, and component trade studies.
- Perform analysis on designs including hand calculations, CAD, and FEA.
- Familiarity working with ERP systems.
- Use data and analysis to set acceptance criteria for production and engineering hardware testing.
- Proactively identify opportunities for improvement within hardware development projects, demonstrating initiative to propose and implement innovative solutions that enhance efficiency, quality, overall project success and reliability.
- Assist with assembly of one-off prototypes and production and fabrication of UAS’s and sub systems.
- Integration of electronics and sensors.
- Logbook is updated to account for all changes and operations of a UAS’s.
- Design and development of test fixtures as required.
- Contributes to the maintaining and the general upkeep of workshop space, tools, and safety protocols thereof.
- Contributes to maintaining and the general upkeep of the infield testing equipment, van, it’s required equipment, and safety protocols thereof.
- Participates in research and development projects.
- Assist with flight operations including testing, demonstrations, and events.
- Perform quality checks of inbound materials and final products – maintain and report on QC data.
- Estimate, prioritize, plan and coordinate testing activities.
- Communicate with teammates on test results.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- You have a B.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent.
- You have 5+ years of industry experience as a Manufacturing Engineer and a Mechanical Engineer.
- You are experienced with manufacturing process development, providing feedback on DFMA, project and team leadership, the product design cycle, tooling, and equipment design, creating detailed work instructions, composite manufacturing methods, electromechanical hardware, and test equipment.
- You have been an integral contributor to multiple projects encompassing the full product design cycle.
- Understanding of Controlled Goods and Jurisdiction and Classification.
- You have demonstrated creativity in developing robust manufacturing and design processes, tooling, and equipment that have increased quality and efficiency, and reduced manufacturing cost and lead times.
- You are highly effective at communicating project schedules, roadblocks, and process requirements to all levels of an organization.
- You have a demonstrated record of working hard, being a trustworthy teammate, holding yourself and others to high standards, and being kind to others.
- Experience CAD modeling with SolidWorks.
- Familiar with tolerance analysis, ANSI drawing standards, and common inspection equipment and methodology.
- Experience with functioning in a cross functional environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suit.
- Demonstrated track record of assuming ownership over development processes and features and delivering outstanding outcomes.
- Proven track record of successfully contributing to shipping products, showcasing the ability to navigate through development cycles, overcome obstacles, and deliver high-quality solutions to meet project deadlines.

Physical Demands
- Lifting is required to move systems from the office to test sites.
